The villages of Cheung Chau and Tai O would not be able to

raise the money necessary for these improvements and at the present time

of financial stringency Government is unable to go ahead with the Scheme

if to do so entails bearing the whole cost.

6.The scheme is part of a general plan for the development of

Lantao Island and Cheung Chau. Important items of that plan which will

be carried out at Government expense include a further piece of reclamation

at Cheung Chau and the reconstruction of the public pier used by the

ferries and launches. The Government is also proposing to build piers at

Tung Chung (grià 296985) on the North coast of Lantao Island and at Silver

Mine Bay (grid-368963) on the East coast. Expenditure on this scheme will

be considerable and will have to be spread over several years.

The necessary staff, materials and labour are available.

The work would be carried out by local contractors well-

versed in the type of work required and under Government supervision.

Quarters for the labour employed present no difficulties.
